No matter where I am I always like to celebrate certain holidays, one of them is Día de Muertos (Dead's day). It is a very particular celebration that has its origins in pre-colonial years.
Yesterday I was invited from one of my Mexican friends to attend this demonstration in an association called Casa Solidaridad at Raval neighborhood.
Between altares de muertos, tamales, chocolate and pan de muertos we could watch a very good movie from 1956 (I think) called Macario, and see three very well displayed altares dedicated mostly to the people who died in violent acts in Mexico (from las muertas de Juárez to Oaxaca's riots).
We also enjoyed La Martiniana and La Llorona songs from the voices of three Mexican non-famous artists, but very talented. I personally love this version from one of my favorite Mexican rock bands.
This year I was unable to set my own altar, to my grandma, my aunt and uncles; but I still wear the goose skin from hearing those songs, from the smell of tamales, from the Mexican phrases one can only understand and make sense of them.
I have to apologize for not posting any pictures... my camera is still broken... yep, my beautiful camera is out of service since last August and I couldn't be more sad.
Happy Día de Muertos to all! Yes happy, 'cause in Mexico we celebrate death, we make fun of it, we live right next to it.
(please watch the video on this link from my cousin and his friend's blog, is awesome!)
